These days that I went with Isabel to help them recycle, I have observed that they actually know to recycle to make this world a better place whereas many of us, do not. Some students, to my opinion, can not differentiate as to where a can goes or trash goes, but these students have to correct the mistakes that others make and they actually know what to and not to recycle. Not only does this benefit the school, but it also benefits the students because they get the money to help pay with their food, and expenditures. It bothers me that some people do not think that they are 'normal' enough to do most of the things that we can do and those people do need to actually volunteer with these students to understand that they are like we are. As a matter of fact, these students are great, they have great personalities and they are wonderful people like many of us.
Personally, I never knew that I would learn many things from these students and one thing I definitely learned from my experience is that, to never again used the "r" word because thinking about the actual connotations of the word, it is a word that hurts, not only the students, but the ones around them that really care. I remember that, personally, I used to use this word, but I learned to never use it again because I eventually learned that it was a deeply offensive word. I have tried to stop people from using that word and I have explained what it really means and some of them I have stopped, but some of them were really ignorant people. Some think that these students are what the stereotypes set them to be, but really once you get to know them they are probably the people that make you laugh and make your day. I really do encourage other students to get to know these students and stop the stereotypers. ALSO, PLEASE STOP THE USE OF THE "R" WORD!!!!!!!!!!!

Nice work! This kids need the time to connect with other students I mean we see them around but most people don’t even say hi to them, and yes I definitely think the "r" word not only has a bad connotation but it impacts their day. When I helped a special ed class I saw the impact the word brings them down making it harder for them to concentrate. I’m really glad your liking the experience with these students.
This Volunteer job is really cool and inspirational. I'm glad to see that you are getting a lot out of this experience. Your pictures are very interesting as well! I had no idea how many activities they do everyday. Maybe they should come up with a presentation to inform people about the importance of recycling!
This experienced had been great for the both of us! Including Alxea, Maria, and Isabel. We should consider doing this again next year just for the fun of it! I mean, if it makes them happy than it tells us that what we're doing is accomplished.
Nowadays, people do use the "R" word on the daily basis. They should know what it really means before saying it, because it does offend other people. Like you said, this "R" word has to stop!
I'm proud of our efforts being put into something we all enjoyed doing, :)
I really really like this post, the pictures and just what you have to say are nice. I'm really good friends with many of these kids too, so you are right they do have amazing personalities. Who do you ask to volunteer with them? Because I've really been wanting to. Keep it up. :)
@ Amanda: Thanks and that is true that it affects them.
@ Gabe:They should, but maybe next year because they are really distracted with the end of the school year. (These pictures are on different days :)
@ Jessie: Yes, we should and I am pretty sure I will go back to visit them maybe even meet some new students as well. I think we are accomplishing as well. :)
@ Madison: Ask Mrs. D in Room 28, I believe, I'm glad that you want because there are not very many that do want do/ plan to. Thanks! :)
Everyime I read your posts it always seems like you had such a good time with the kids. Its good that you are getting something out of volunteering here and not just doing it to get it done. It was really sweet that you said the kids can make a difference in only thirty minutes to your day. It shows that you really enjoy it. Its really interesting how how pointed out that they know more about recycling and its true. We take to much for granted but they appreciate all the little things to make a difference. I have been to their classroom before and they are normal kids. They can function in everyday life and they make a difference. I admit to having used the "r" word but i do catch myself now. You did a great jo!
Thanks Monisha:)!!!!!
