The last day for the Native American Studies Program was Saturday June 9,2012. They ended it with a Pow Wow which is a small gathering where they dance and they have jewelry, leather, shoes, purses and other really interesting things that they make. When I got there I saw many people there. They were mostly watching the dancers who had some really interesting outfits. Many Native Americans had feathers and really colorful jewelry and leather shoes. Some had booths where they were selling hand made jewelry, kits to make leather purses, clothes, and other things. I went to every booth and I bought a few things like crystal rocks and this really nice rock with a horse craved in it. The horse is suppose to symbolize inner power freedom. Thats one of the things I really like about the Native American culture everything has a meaning.
As we walked over to the next booth we noticed a really big pipe we asked the person what it was for and he said that in the transition of a boy to a man they were to smoke out of the pipe with their father. Also whenever they had company over they would ask the man to have a smoke to show them respect and welcoming. Mike who was the man in charge of the booth said that women werent allowed to touch the pipe in fact they werent allowed to do what men did like shoot arrows or throw spheres something Mike said that really caught my attention was "women are givers of life men are takers of life" what he meant was that since women could give birth they gave life therefore shouldn't take life by killing that was a men's job. He also said that when there were many men in charge it was usually the elder woman who made critical decisons in the tribe. This was really intresting to know.
We then walked over to the dancers and there were these little girls with some really nice outfits I asked if I could take a picture with them and they said yes. Then I met this older dancer who wore a really nice outfit with lots of feathers and bead he told me that the Pow Wow waa a gathering where all tribes came together. I asked him how he felt about the way their lands were taken away from them and he told me the coolest story about how his great great great grandfather was the first Native American to become a U.S citizen. I found his story really intresting.
I really enjoyed working with the Native American program I learned so much about their culture and it made me realize how we all see things in a different way. For example, my culture can be similar to the Native American culture but it can be really different as well. The kids I met from the different trbes thaught me so much about them and how they are different. Unfortunetly the Native American Studies Program is over due to school ending so we wont be able to go till school starts. Im really glad me and Edgar joined this program and I cant wait to go back.
