Soccer at Cabrillo!

So as usual I've kept going to volunteer at Cabrillo Elementary, and as usual I played soccer with the kids on Wednesday. This past Wednesday there wasn't as many kids though for some reason. A lot of them wanted to play basketball so there were less kids playing soccer, so the game got that much more intense. There was a little kid on my team with a Mexico shirt on and he really impressed me. The way he played soccer was pretty amazing, because he looked about 9 years old yet he actually had very good control of the ball. He was even juking one of the other volunteers there. The only bad thing that happened last week was that I was going for the ball and the ball went off the grass and onto the black top, me and some other volunteer on the other team were racing for the ball, and when I got to the blacktop I slid and fell because I was wearing cleats. The ironic thing is that you wear cleats so you won't slide and slip, yet I still did when I was wearing them. Playing soccer was still fun as always.

I love Cabrillo, I didn't volunteer there last year, but I did volunteer there my freshman year and I will attempt to keep volunteering there because it helps the kids have a role model to look up to, it helps the kids with their homework, it helps them do physical activities, and it's just fun! I never would have thought that volunteering was so fun, but it is. I am so glad that I got to be a part of American Studies this year and I know I truly got a lot from this year. I feel truly lucky to have had such wonderful teachers, it really sucks for other students that they didn't get to have the same experience we American Studies students had. We are truly making a difference here and it's awesome that i got a chance to do this and I am so happy I did it.

The social issue here is many that were addressing at Cabrillo. We are helping children that need help with their homework. Sometimes kids just can't get enough help because classrooms are getting bigger now. When you have one teacher and thirty kids in a class its a lot different than having one teacher and nine-teen kids in a class. I don't know exactly this teacher to student ratio at Cabrillo, but it is a social issue that needs to be addressed and one way can be giving students some extra one on one help on the things they didn't understand in class. Another social issue is obesity that can be definitely addressed by promoting exercise to kids in fun ways, just how we play soccer or basketball with the kids at Cabrillo.

Yes, we need to be role models for these kids so they can have someone to look up to. If they don't have anyone to follow in their footsteps they could get carried away by someone else influencing them to do bad things. We must be there role models in ways that are fun to them. If you play soccer with them they could be encouraged to play soccer in a leauge as they grow up and they can be playing soccer instead of doing drugs or something else. We have to be there for these kids because sometimes these kids don't have anyone there for them which is why they get involved in bad things, and that's an issue.
