Breast cancer sucks, it is a horrible disease that even though millions are raising money for a cure science has not advanced enough to make a dent in search for a cure. Thousands of women are being infected are dying due to this disease. Hopefully with all of us together united as one we can find a cure. This is the fourth time that i had volunteered my time at Safeway to sell baked goods and was saddened that it would be my last time. My mother couldn't help this time so i had Latrell and Jordan come to my house and bake the day before. It was definitely a bit difficult being as though none of us has any experience baking, but we managed. We decorated the cupcakes and packed them up for the long day ahead of raising money for a cure.
We woke up early and decided to get a early start so we could sell even more. We got to Safeway got our materials together and set up our booth. Then the moment of truth, we all put on the colorfully decorated bras and the insecurity and laughs began. Every second we would hear someone giggle and little kids would point. The point of wearing them was to attract attention and it was definitely working. In the first two hours we sold two hundred dollars and at this rate we would make a lot more. About halfway through the day a group of women came up to us almost in tears giving donations and telling us their story. One women told us that she had had breast cancer, got rid of it, then got it again. People like her made it worth putting a few hours of work in. If she can battle a deadly disease we could easily sell some cup cakes. She and her friends blessed us and told us to have a great day, it was very rewarding.
At the end of the day we raised 400 dollars that goes straight to the bras for a cause foundation. I gave the money to the store manager and she sent it to the foundation. This is the first time i have ever felt like i had done something worth doing for a great cause. Im really glad this american studies class gave me the push to volunteer. It was a great experience and i cant wait to volunteer again.
This is the tools we used to make all the homemade cupcakes

This is really fantastic. I applaud you three for living through the stares and giggles of small children (and possibly immature adults.) And even if you didn't make someone's day brighter by the nobility of the cause, at least people would get some joy. The experience with the cancer survivor must have been a pivotal moment--seeing how you are helping people like her. I'd love more pics, but otherwise wonderful post!
I've done volunteer for the Breast Cancer Walk and people came for the walk and run. During that day I was surprised to see the amount of people that had breast cancer and I was glad that I volunteer for that event. I too felt the same way as you after doing the volunteer.
I agree that Breast Cancer is one of the many things that are killing innocent lives everyday. One of my aunts is a breast cancer survivor and it was so hard for her to go through that experience because it totally drained her physically and emotionally. It was sweet how you guys all came together to bake cupckaes for sucha good cause. It was so nice to hear the story of the women that you met while selling the cupcakes. Im glad that you felt you got something out of volunteering! Good work :)
Props for all the hard work and it takes a lot of guts to stand in front of a store selling baked goods with a bra but its for a great cause !! Its seriously very sad to see how women get breast cancer but it also develops warriors within them. Good job for this Jesse , you should feel amazing for raising $400 because anything helps.
