Just Like You

My experiences when working with the Special Ed Students at Washington High School was a reminder for me about how much I missed and I loved helping out people.  My previous summers, a while back, I had been a summer camp leader at a camp helping out and working with kids. All the activities I did with the Special Ed Student the past couple of weeks were very similar to what I did as a camp leader.  Working with these students has made me want to pursue this in my future and made me realize this may be something I might want to do when looking for a job. I really enjoyed seeing what made these students happy, either it was coloring, playing basketball or even scanning through new paper adds. The past couple of weeks not only did these students teach me various lessons, but they taught me some things about myself that I was unaware of.  When playing basketball shubhendu, one of the students, taught to keep on shooting, even if I missed.  Alex, another student, showed that kindness and great manners really went a long way.  And just like any high school student, I had my days when I was overwhelmed with school work and I loved how when I was around these students I would instantly forget what I was stressing about or how I was worried about something.

I believe that it is important for our society to pay attention to the Special Ed Students because I feel like they are always seen differently and sometimes getting put down for their differences (Judged). They are often seen as not being “normal” enough to be capable of doing things that “normal” people do. I believe these students are just like anybody in life. They want to be accepted and want to be involved. These students are just like every other teenager, who love playing sports, reading, and socializing.  They have shown me that they are capable of being helpful and independent by recycling around campus, cooking and shopping. I very glad I was able to do this equity project because it taught me the more you judge a person , the less time you have get to know them.  It was great gaining new friendships and just because this equity project is now finished, doesn't mean that my friendships with these students will end.

Sometimes i get really mad because people judge these kids. Before i used to judge them but now i realize how wrong i was about these kids. theyre not that much diffrent than us just because they have to overcome a few more obstacles than us doesnt make them nonhuman. these kids have so much to show us and teach us if onoy all of us took the chance to get to know them we would be amazed of everything they do.

I love what you're doing! My friend throughout Elementary school was special Ed and I normally had to stick up for him when he would get harassed. A lot of them are really nice people that have an amazing sense of humor but people sometimes think of them as not socially acceptable. It puts a smile on my face to see someone spending time with people that are commonly made fun of.

I love that you are helping out these kids. Its important for them to feel accepted in society. They are such good kids and they have evey right to be looked at the same way we are seen by the people who suround us everyday of our lives.

I love this, I'm honestly really jealous you get to hang out with them and help them out, because I love being around them, no matter what they continue to smile, and people do judge them and don't take the time to understand them, and it makes me happy that you are and doing this project. Keep it up Lex :)

You really grasped a great lesson by volunteering with these students . Its really moving to see how a student like you that is our age can realize that just like any other person these Special Ed students should not be judged and they live a life like any other person but just like others they are also all different. Great job Alxea and the pictures are great !
