American Apperal's first ever plus size modeling contest is relevant because American Apperal has a reputation for marketing to the small size population which was unfair because their initial reach to the public was that only skinny was beatiful.
This new idea of creating a plus size modeling contest helps break the idea that woman need to be skinny and look a certain way in order for us to be beautiful and accepted in society. Now their new concept supports health instead of woman's body size and porportion. Which it does not only affect the general public but also the models that work in this company and others because the average model is size zero, and many of them are victims of anorexia or bulimia.
This contest is something new that the AA company is doing to break tthe dominant ideology pertaning female outer beauty but it also supports the idea because a size 8 is considered a plus size and the average American woman is size 8-14. So how can woman feel like they don't have to be skinny to be beautiful if we are still getting classified?
Many woman were excited for the opportunity of becoming a plus size model for the AA company. They feel like it is a great opportunity to show the world that fashion is not only for the small size woman and that beauty is more than being skinny. Also, AA is supporting the fight against anorexia and bulimia victims, many of them models and young woman that feel pressured by society to be a certain size and look a certain way.
"Just because someone is skinny does not mean that the person is phisically fit,"a woman posts on the AA face book page. That is another problem among society and proffecional dieticians. The fight for being phisically healthy and accepted in socety. While doctors fight to prove their point modeling companies and clothing companies like American Apperal, did in the past, would pressure their models to be the type of thin that for many of us is nearly impossible to obtain withought starvation. With this, people see the possitive side of the companies twisting point of including real woman sizes and not just model sizes.
On the other side woman are feeling more looked oppon for their bigger sizes because of the widely known classification of plus sizes. A size eight is considered a plus size and the average American woman is in between sizes eight to fourteen. An angered contestant posted a coment on their face book page that said,"I'm a size 18?
If the average american woman is size 8-14 What does that make me? A whale?" And many more coments like this one excist of woman that feel that the companies approach to reach out to "bigger woman" is erronious because of this type of classification.

How come no one else commented on this? It's awesome. I love the title too.
I like the part where you talk about being classified. No one wants to be labeled by their jean size, we're human beings not numbers.. Especially because numbers show the diversity between us all, but that diversity creates a lot of insecurity.
Also when you said the average is 8-14, but size 8 is considered plus size.... I don't know anything about numbers like that but I know that there are plenty of girls who aren't toothpicks... and it's not that skinny isn't beautiful, but the pressure to be that is too much.
The worst of it is when you hear of anorexic/bulimic girls who are nothing but bones, yet they still think they're ugly and need to lose weight. I'm not saying that the fashion industry is to blame for it all, but it sure as hell doesn't make anything easier.
