Call of Duty Cultural Analysis

Call of Duty is very important today because the series is one of the best selling video games ever. It has definitely made an impact on the world. Overall it is a great game series in my opinion. The Call of Duty trend has been getting bigger and bigger as you can tell by its sales. The first Modern Warfare sold only 1.57 million copies in the first month of its release. Black Ops sold 7 million copies in the first day. The first Modern Warfare is the 4th game in the Call of Duty series; Black Ops is the 7th game in the Call of Duty series as you can see the Call of Duty trend is growing daftly fast. Call of Duty is a great game and I think with its Modern Warfare installment it really says something about the government and the military today. In the game Modern Warfare 2 Lieutenant General Shepherd of the task force 141 becomes an antagonist when he betrays the task force. He planned on killing off members of the task force so he could use the Intel they had found so he could “write his own history” I believe this shows that you can never really trust the government because they can do very bad things or very good things and you can never know because anything they say goes. They might be saying a lie or the truth, you can never really know. I chose to write about Modern Warfare 2 because it is the most recent Modern Warfare game. Yes there is Black Ops that is a newer game than Modern Warfare 2 but Black Ops takes place in the Cold War, and Modern Warfare 3 hasn't came out yet so I decided Modern Warfare 2 is the most recent and relevant game to talk about.

In Modern Warfare 2 Makarov (the antagonist in the game) commits a terrorist attack on Russia. The U.S. had sent a member of the task force 141 undercover with Makarov so he could get Intel of Makarov being a terrorist but Makarov was one step ahead of the U.S. and when they finished the terrorist attack Makarov killed the undercover agent. Russia then found his body and thought the terrorist attack was done by the U.S. Russia then started a war with the U.S. by sending a surprise attack on the U.S. The task force then realized they had to find hard evidence that it was Makarov behind the terrorist attack not the U.S. When U.S was about to lose the war the task force broke out of jail a long time enemy (Price) of Makarov. Price launched a nuke into the atmosphere which created an EMP on the U.S. soil where the invasion was going on. The EMP disabled all electronics so the Russian’s helicopters, tanks, and communication links didn’t work. This gave the U.S. an advantage in the war because the Russians couldn’t send reinforcements or proceed with their intended attack. Once the U.S. settled down they went after Makarov again. Once the task force had Makarov in their clutches General Shepherd killed off two of the four main members of the task force. He then decided to go after the other two members. Why would Shepherd do this? He did this because he wanted all the credit, all the glory. He planned on killing them, capturing Makarov himself and writing his own history. When the other two members of the task force learned about Shepherd’s betrayal they went after him and they killed him.

In the game Shepherd wanted all the glory so he stopped at nothing to get it. He even killed members of the task force that he was leader of. He was so selfish he couldn’t share the glory with them. He wanted it all for him so he could “write his own history.” This quote is straight from the game. Shepherd himself said this line. He said he wanted to “write his own history” and this really stands out to me because I feel just as in this game someone tried to write his own history someone in real life can write their own history. How do we know the president doesn’t lie about stuff and he writes his own history? How do we know the governor doesn’t write his own history?
