Lady Gaga's Born This Way: A Popular Culture Analysis

Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta, otherwise known as the super popular singer Lady Gaga. Lady Gaga's entire composition; her works, her inspirations, her life, are all matters that can be investigated and analyzed, but for the sake of conciseness in this post I will only be investigating the title song of her newest album: Born This Way. "Born This way" has been discussed in numerous situations ranging from the hallways of school to religious meetings. It has challenged the prevailing dominant ideology and simultaneously brought a new ideology to the focus of America. From "Weird Al" Yankovic to Glee, and from talented little girls to old-fashioned religious leaders, "Born This Way" has been on the minds of many people.

The song is basically saying that the speaker was born the way they were, and people shouldn't change them, because everyone is already on the right track of their own lives. There are specific examples regarding race, religion, and sexual identity, but the overall tone leads to a self-empowerment message to anyone and everyone.

Lady Gaga's "Born This Way" is, in short, a powerful, optimistic message to people of all religions, races, sexes, and sexual orientations. So why is this important, it's just a song telling people to be themselves? Why has a pep-talk with a melody transgressed the barrier from 'entertainment' to 'debatable topic?' Controversy, with a capital C. Gaga has combined the work of a critic and builder into one; she has challenged the current status quo associated with the older demographic, and helped cement the ideology of the younger generation: acceptance for all people. I like to think of this song as the pinnacle point in the turning of ideologies, because while the belief for no discrimination based on things the people cannot change about themselves has been around for a while, Gaga's song personifies this idea. The social ideal and song have the same meaning; "I'm beautiful in my way/'Cause God makes no mistakes/I'm on the right track baby/I was born this way/Don't hide yourself in regret/Just love yourself and you're set/I'm on the right track baby/I was born this way." For so long society has striven to be uniform, when what we really need is to accept others, and ourselves. Gaga's song "Born This Way" represents this idea beautifully.

I totally agree with this blog post. I wrote about Lady Gaga and mentioned this song in my blog post. It's a powerful song and it does say a lot about discrimination, racism, and sexuality identity. This was a well written post on what Lady Gaga was trying to prove :)
