Companies have set the precedent that in order to reach success; you must make a lot of money. On the other hand, non-profit organizations use surplus revenues to further address the needs of their community. A recent trend, "Buy One, Give One", is a strategy that is both beneficial to those in need, and satisfying to the consumer. Many all over the world have been affected by devastating natural disasters and hit hard as our economy continues to struggle. Now is the time that something needs to change, i believe that it is a cooperate responsibility to take part in caring for the communities that allow them to prosper.
After appearing on the Amazing Race, Season 2, Blake Mycoskie reflected on his experience in Argentina, seeing a void he believed he could fill. After returning to America, he started up a shoe company which would later launch the "one for one" movement. His product, a shoe similar to the alpargata design, was low cost and easy to make, but still provided opportunities for children all over the world. In several developing countries, being barefoot increases the risk for disease, it also may prevent them from attending school because of a strictly enforced dress code. TOMS shoes are now sold in over 500 stores throughout the United States. Ever since the company started in 2006, over a million shaves have been donated to children in need from countries such as, Ethiopia, Haiti, and South America.
Some may say Mycoskie pioneered the "One For One" business model in which for every single product sold, another goes to an individual in need for free. His response, "Lots of companies give us credit for the concept and we're flattered. Whether we were the first originator of the idea, doesn't matter. The more important thing is the fact that its happening in other areas of business." He is exactly right; companies shouldn't be the only ones benefiting from success, its their responsibility to provide opportunities for the less fortunate. "We're in business to make money and do good, i couldn't have envisioned it any other way", said Blake Mycoskie. TOMS went against the American ideology, continuing to prosper as a business, while sharing their success.
